We have 6 children and youth safe spaces situated in the major slums and peri- urban communities (Kibos,Railways ward,Manyatta, Nyalenda A,Nyalenda B and Bandani) in Kisumu, Kenya.  The  base camps operate from Tuesday to Saturday (0830hrs to 1700hrs).

The base camps are open to Blue Cross Club members and other children and youth within the communities. The base camps host a number of activities to prevent young people from using alcohol and other substance use, idling and other forms of crime activities.

The base camp activities include;

  • forums and dialogue discussions with duty bearers to address issues affecting Children and youth like early marriages, teenage pregnancies, school drop-out, abuse of alcohol and other drugs.
  • Life Skills Education for children and caregivers.
  • Training on Dancing, Drama, Modelling, Drawing, storytelling, playing Keyboard, singing, arts,digital literacy among others that helps to nurture their talents.

The smooth running of the base camps has been attributed to good relations with the community and the acceptance of the project as a major input to positive behaviour change among  the youth. The base camps have decentralized the organization’s operations; members of the public can walk in to make consultations, job applications, counselling services, clarity of services offered, seeking partnership and giving feedback about our activities.
